Neolithic settlement North Munster Co. Tipperary
The excavation at Tullahedy, Co. Tipperary in advance of the M7 road construction uncovered an enclosed Neolithic settlement site dated to around 3670 BC. The settlement was located on an esker and this was surrounded by lake on two sides. The remains included a timber palisade along the west side which secured the site there. Three Neolithic houses were recorded as well as almost 300 pits. The environmental analyses confirmed an economy of mixed farming. The site included 1500 stone tools, almost 130 stone axe-heads and the remains of over 300 ceramic vessels. There are stong indications that the site may have been part of a Neolithic trade network in the North Munster region.
