Abstract

This paper describes the preliminary results of a pilot study based on Terra/ Aqua MODIS data to estimate temperature and chlorophyll a concentrations in two Alpine and one Scandinavian lake with different biological characteristics. Initially, the standard MODIS OC3 and SST products were tested and validated with in situ measurements from coinciding dates. Then, level 1B and 2 products derived from a recent MODIS scene were used to test the applicability of a set of existing algorithms from the published literature for the estimation of temperature and chlorophyll in temperate lakes. The results are promising for temperature estimations, but suggest the need for further investigation in terms of chlorophyll a.
