The relationshp between TeX and SGML (Standard Generalised Markup Language, ISO 8879) has often been uneasy, with adherents to one system or the other displaying symptoms remininscent of the religious wars popular between devotees of TeX and of word-processors. SGML and TeX can in fact coexist successfully, provided features of one system are not expected of the other. This paper presents a pilot program to test one method of acheving such a cohabitation.
