The relationship between TeX and SGML (Standard Generalised Markup Language,
IS0 8879) has often been uneasy, with adherents to one system or the other displaying symptoms remininscent of the religious wars popular between devotees
of TeX and of word-processors.
SGML and TeX can in fact coexist successfully, provided features of one system
are not expected of the other. This paper presents a pilot program to test
one method of achieving such a cohabitation.
