It is argued that most of the special reverse types on the coinage struck in the name of Edward the Elder in West Mercia during the period c. 907-18 probably rework designs, or parts of the designs, of late Roman coins of the period c.324-50. It is also argued that these designs were chosen in order to illustrate a consistent theme, the providence of God.
