FAMILY-CENTERED CARE CHRONIC-KIDNEY-DISEASE QUALITY-OF-LIFE PLATT REPORT CHILDREN PARENTS CANCER NURSES DEATH COMMUNICATION
When fostering an ethos of family-centred care, nurses aspire to look after not only the child with the health concerns but also the family as a whole. While the primary focus is the sick child, the secondary focus is often the parents/carers, as these are the family members that health professionals have the most contact with. The needs of siblings of sick children are often overlooked or ignored. This situation is sometimes mirrored in the home environment as the sick child becomes the central family focus, leaving the well siblings feeling vulnerable and isolated. This chapter explores the needs of children who live with a child sibling with acute or chronic health care needs. It also explores the caring role of the well sibling for his or her brother or sister with a health issue or physical disability. The effect of bereavement on siblings is also examined and support groups for siblings are discussed.
