This paper presents a brief review of stochastic and deterministic optimisation methods for power systems with variable renewable generation. The modelling of large pumped hydro energy storage in a power system with significant wind penetration is also addressed and in particular the challenges associated with the dispatch of large energy storages in an environment with wind forecast uncertainty. Daily optimisation of large storage units can lead to under utilisation of reservoir capacity and inefficient operation of the unit as storage capacity exceeds the optimisation horizon. A number of possible release strategies for large scale pumped hydro energy storage in the context of high wind energy penetration and wind forecast uncertainty are presented and discussed
