There is significant diversity across human cultural settings when it comes to disposal of the dead but burial of human remains is common. Burial excavation involves the careful exposure of remains in a systematic and controlled manner. Detailed recording is carried out at all stages of the process. Technological advances have improved the accuracy of this process while an ever‐evolving theoretical landscape has resulted in the recentering of burials and mortuary contexts in archaeology.
