The era of the cinema newsreel in the 1900-1930 period coincided with an era of turmoil in Irish social and political life. Cork city and county appeared frequently in newsreels which documented events during the War of Independence and Civil War and later in the early years of the state. With a focus on stories relating to Cork city and environs, Dr Ciara Chambers (UCC) will consider the history of early newsreel production and distribution while Kasandra O’Connell (IFI Irish Film Archive) will discuss the acquisition, digitisation and preservation of the Irish Independence Newsreel Collection, now safeguarded within the IFI Irish Film Archive. The full collection is available to view for free on the IFI Player (ifiplayer.ie).
