This paper describes interdisciplinary curriculum designed to improve student understanding of connections between geography, music, history, and culture, while also encouraging students to develop greater understanding of complex issues that are often ignored in traditional social studies classes. The music-and-geography workshops supplement and support 6th grade world history, where the focus is on the ancient world, by encouraging students to discover the roots of contemporary musical forms in world cultures and historical events. The inquiry process used in the lessons is also designed to enhance writing and critical thinking skills.
