Féile Séamus Creagh annual lecture, delivered at 'The Rooms', St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, 7.9.2022
This presentation, featuring archival audio recordings, will introduce some singers and explore a number of Newfoundland-related songs from the Waterford or 'Déise' song tradition. Some of the earliest ethnographic recordings of Irish-language song in existence will be shared and discussed, as will those featuring several of the region's most influential singers throughout the 20th century – foremost among them, the great Nioclás Tóibín (1928–1994), a singer who held special significance for the eponymous honoree of the festival.
