This was the first work I composed for an orchestra of lithophones (musical instruments made from resonant stone) two years of instrument building resulted in a large set of lithophones of various kinds, including very large granite gongs and small quartzite-keyed pitched percussion. This piece is structured around the pythagorean theorem, converting spatial to rhythmic relationships and was performed by 6 percussionists, 3 singers, and 5 dancers. It was premiered at Theatre II at California Institute of the Arts. As with many of my compositions, there is no written score: I taught the piece orally to all of the musicians.
