Role: soloist (shakuhachi), playing a recital of traditional Japanese music as part of the ceremony.
Performed classical traditional repertoire pieces for Shakuhachi (end-blown bamboo flute), and Koto (17 string zither)
The Kyoto Prize was developed with the Nobel Foundation and, while it is sometimes thought of as an “Asian Nobel”, it was created as a prestigious award for areas and fields not typically covered by the Nobel. My performance at the Kyoto Prize award ceremony stems from my long involvement in Japanese Traditional music as a shakuhachi player. I am a student of Mori Kozan, a master (daishihan) shakuhachi player in Kasugai, Japan.
