The ABBONIMONET gold type from the Crondall hoard is not an Anglo-Saxon shilling, but a Merovingian tremissis. The device on the reverse of the type is a form of monogram that contains the letters L, M, V, and C in the form of two pairs of ligatured letters, an L combined with an M and a V combined with a C, in abbreviation of the Latin name of Limoges, Lemovicas. The Abbo who struck this coin is identifiable as Abbo of Limoges. This type should now be omitted from any further discussions of early Anglo-Saxon gold coinage.
