Football solidarity mechanism have come about as a key aspect of the modern men’s professional game in response to the implications of the Bosman Ruling. FIFA, working with the EU, brought forward a scheme designed to balance the rights of players to move as workers whilst at the same time attempting to make football more financially sustainable for the clubs who train and develop the star players in their early years. FIFA’s Regulations have attempted to walk the delicate line between the lex sportiva and European Union law. The effectiveness and indeed the legality of this endeavour is still subject to much debate.
