This Introduction argues that the period 1998-2023 is a fertile era for Shakespeare biofiction on the stage and screen inaugurated by Shakespeare in Love (1998, dir. Madden). In the wake of its release, North America and the British Isles produced a concentrated and diverse range of Shakespeare biofiction in plays, musicals, films, and television. Shakespeare biofiction, then, is largely an Anglo-American phenomenon that shares preoccupations – such as Shakespeare’s genius, family and professional relationships, and legacy – across boundaries of genre and form. The Introduction sets out how the collection, which includes contributions from creators of biofiction and literary and performance scholars, makes original interventions in the burgeoning creative and critical field of biofiction through different approaches and theoretical lenses including performance studies, the biopic, pop culture, gender studies, and queer theory. Ultimately, this collection offers Shakespearean creatives and educators a springboard for their own biofictional teaching, research, and artistic reinterpretation.
