In this edited collection of symposium presentations and posters postgraduate tutors and demonstrators record their initial experiences of teaching in higher education. The In At the Deep End symposium was the culmination of a module entitled: Teaching and Learning for Graduate Studies. Over the course of an academic year, graduates were encouraged to tackle a central question or problem emerging from their teaching practice, to formulate strategies for student engagement, and to critically analyse the effects of applying these strategies from the perspective of their emerging teaching and learning philosophies. Editors, James Cronin, Bettie Higgs, Marian McCarthy and Jacinta McKeon situate the experiences of the contributors within the context of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) framework. What emerges, from this volume, are insights on teaching and learning from across a diversity of disciplines articulated by postgraduates themselves.
The Higher Education Authority (HEA) Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) has funded the production of this book through its action line to develop generic training modules for PhD students. The production of the book has been supported by the National Academy for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (NAIRTL). Ionad Bairre and graduate students have collaborated to produce this book as a resource to support graduate students who are teaching.
