UCC Library’s Special Collections has 36 books published 1476-1550 across three collections: St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Older Printed Books and Strong Room. Little research has been undertaken on them, bar Prof. Margaret Connolly’s article on Battle Abbey. Their extensive marginalia and provenance marks are predominantly not contemporaneous but the act of writing indicates that the later owner believed these books were worth keeping and inscribing whether to demonstrate acts of possession, memory making or pomp. This paper will survey these 36 books interrogating the types of books, ownership marks and what further research may be possible with these items.
