In June 2023, the University College Cork MA Museum Studies class launched an exhibition at Cork Public Museum titled ‘Cork and the Roman World’, covering Roman contact in Cork
as well as the lasting impact of Roman influence. The student exhibition ranges from Iron Age archaeology and culture prior to Roman contact, to nineteenth century neo-Classical architecture in Cork City. This presentation will provide an overview of the exhibition, explain curational choices, and highlight elements of the exhibition designed to engage with the public. While Roman finds from the eastern and northern parts of Ireland are reasonably
well known, the south of the country has received far less focus, due to a perceived lack of evidence. The exhibition was an opportunity to review the evidence and incorporate recent research. This presentation will discuss some individual finds featured in the exhibition in order to present a better understanding of Roman influence in the south of Ireland.
